Course in  Statistical Meta-Analysis

July 30, 3009

To EPA's Statistical Community,    Next week is the very large annual Joint Statistical Meeting in Washington.   Several of you have asked about papers related to the environment.   I have attached two pdf files (so hopefully, not everyone prints everything).    The first one lists presentations by EPA staff.  The second lists all the activities sponsored (or cosponsored) by the Statistics and the Environment Section.

Several points:

1.  The registration and technical sessions are  in the Washington Convention Center (use the Green Line Metro to Mt. Vernon Sq/Convention Center OR use another mode of transit, being sure to hop on the median to avoid mean drivers)
2.  The reception for the Statistics and the Environment Section is in the nearby Renaissance Hotel  (999 Ninth St. NW)  on Monday evening, Aug. 3 at 6 pm in meeting room 4
3.  You can view the entire program and even create your personalized program at    http://www.amstat.org
4.  This is a great opportunity to see and hear what is going on in this profession.   There are usually about 4000 attendees so there is something for everyone
5.  I encourage you to attend, but not only for the technical presentations.   Talking to colleagues is a major benefit of these meetings.

I hope to see you there. Barry

Statistics Count.....So Count on Us

April 21, 2009

To the EPA Statistical Community,

We will have our next  EPA Statistics Users Group Meeting in conjunction with the EPA Quality/Statistics Meeting in San Antonio in May.   Specifically, our meeting, which will be a joint EPA Statistics Users Group/SAS Users Group/R Users Group Meeting, will be at  5:30pm on Wednesday, May 13 in the Bayesian Room of the Westin Riverwalk Hotel.   (OK, OK, I just made up the room name.  I have no prior knowledge of the room.   We will announce it at the conference).   This will be an in-person meeting so we get to see some of the faces instead of just voices over the phone.   I will also have some "goodies" provided by SAS to distribute.

A few events to keep in mind for the near future:

May 12-14:  Quality Statistics Meeting in San Antonio.   In addition to our EPA Statistics Users Group meeting mentioned above, there will be a large collection of technical presentations and a tutorial (2 in fact) on environmental statistics given by John Warren and me.

July 15-16:  “Seminar on Innovative Approaches to Turn Statistics into Knowledge” Jointly organized by the U.S. Census Bureau, the OECD, and the World Bank.  The seminar is scheduled to be held on July 15 – 16, 2009, at the U.S. Census Bureau.   There are a limited number of spaces available.   Please contact  Margaret Conomos   (566-0617) for information.

August 1-6:  American Statistical Association Joint Statistical Meetings:   This is a great opportunity for listening to sessions, meeting fellow statisticians, and taking continuing education courses.   And it is being held conveniently right here in Washington.   Registration begins May 1 - and there is an early bird rate!!     See   www.amstat.org

September 14-18:  Joint EPA GIS/Statistics Workshop in Lake Tahoe:   I am organizing a session on data analysis/statistics in conjunction with GIS work.   Please contact me for information.

November 2-4:  Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology:  A very informative conference about Federal statistics.  The quality of the papers at this workshop has always impressed me.   The registration fee is quite nominal as my office is one of the Federal groups that gives a small stipend to the organization.   This will also be held in Washington.

Tomorrow is Earth Day.  I am starting a family  vacation in South Africa tomorrow.   Since I will be flying east, there will be less of Earth Day for me than for you.   Lucky you.   I will be back May 8, and then will go to San Antonio for the conference.    See you there. Barry
